Breeding
When breeding Dachshunds, it is important to start with healthy and genetically sound dogs. It is also important to properly match the temperament and conformation of the dogs to produce the best possible offspring.
The female should be in good physical condition before breeding, and it is best to wait until she is at least two years old to breed her for the first time. The breeding process can be done either naturally or through artificial insemination. The female will usually have a 21-day heat cycle, and breeding should occur during the middle of this cycle for the best chance of success.
After breeding, the pregnancy will last around 63 days, and it is important to monitor the female’s health throughout the pregnancy. It is also important to prepare a safe and comfortable whelping area for the female to give birth in. Once the puppies are born, they will need to be cared for properly, including providing proper nutrition and socialization.
It’s important to keep in mind that breeding dachshunds and other dogs is a serious responsibility that requires a lot of time and effort, as well as knowledge about genetics, health and canine care. It also involves significant costs and also a lot of work and time. Therefore, we take extra special care of the males, females and puppies.
We use a kids play pool for the whelping box with great success, and use comfortable blankets to line the whelping area, so the pups are comfortable. In addition, we socialize the pups with the other dogs using a dog play pen to get them acclimated with our other dogs.
